Some metamorphoses disrupt the snowball that one forms with oneself over lived time, that big round ball: full, replete, complete. These strange figures rise out of the wound, or out of nothing, an unhitching from what came before.

– Catherine Malabou, The Ontology of the Accident
In her book The Ontology of the Accident, French philosopher Catherine Malabou writes that “no one thinks spontaneously about a plastic art of destruction. Yet destruction too is formative. A smashedup face is still a face, a stump a limb, a traumatized psyche remains a psyche. Destruction has its own sculpting tools.” She reflects on the power of phenomena we commonly think of as disruptive – destruction, deviation, failure, trauma, discard, expiration, loss, crisis, aging, even death – yet are in fact constantly transforming the world. They alter the shape of bodies, objects, and ideas, which all prove to be unsettlingly malleable. The joint exhibition of Laura Gozlan and Šimon Chovan takes up these modeling tools of "destructive plasticity," testing through sculpture and moving image the integrity of bodies and the recognizability of (social) forms. Can we be sure of what we see and hear? Are we outside or within? Where lies the boundary between intimate and public? And what hides in the bowels beneath the rigid surface of the pavement?

Stepping into the landscape of “The New Wounded” might at first feel unsettling, as it does not open itself effortlessly, giving us a series of “nice” objects with polished surfaces. It does not promise a dreamy escape from the everyday, but rather forces us to kneel down and look closer, to squeeze in, sink in, and get dirty while trying. The exhibition thus asks the spectator to perform a symbolic lowering of a sort – a movement which leads us away from “great ideals” and bright futures, flooding the gallery space with a dense mess in which we can't trust the basic “truths'' we've been told. As Mum, the protagonist of Gozlan's video Foulplay hints, “it’s true there’s a treasure buried in the ground. But it’s not gold – it’s filth,” inviting us to descend into the dirty, the ignored, the low – the both real and abstract sewage of life, the inner body crawling with animating parasites, even as we confidently proclaim autonomy and uniqueness.
Submerged, we enter a murky zone in which the edges of former infrastructure disappear, and the silhouettes of things only hint at their possible shapes – a moment when the technological and organic fuse together while remaining distinct, offering a peek into a (perhaps already present) world where forms melt down and take up new meanings. The sculptural works in the exhibition embrace this ambivalence: they shift what seems familiar, sometimes allowing for a glimpse of resemblance or symmetry, and other times twisting it completely, covering up the contours of things until they turn strange, unrecognizable, alien. Chovan's glinting protrusions of steel swallowed by beeswax, the tubular shapes revealed by cuts in silicon molds, or the pipes and chassis of Gozlan's sculptures remind the viewer of the marriage between bodies and technology presented with absurd literacy in J. G. Ballard's Crash – the novel in which wounds famously functioned as openings into a new, technologically transformed era of human life. Likewise, we can recall William Burroughs' belief in the magical power of the cut, as he famously stated: “When you cut into the present, the future leaks out.” But we have known of our instrumentalization for a long time now – industrialized, bent and fucked over. It rarely surprises us anymore, and the increased hiddenness of this reality is matched only by the banality of its critiques. But now that future possibility is vanquished, what leaks out when we cut?

“The New Wounded” attempts to open these questions, embracing the infected, the unstable, the stupid, the cursed. Yet without praising a misogynistic, penetrative death-drive in which self-mutilation always holds hands with the destruction of the Other, we are rather interested in different sensitivity of the wound: that which departs not from the one who inflicts violence, but from the wounded, or from the wound itself. Here self-dissection poses a performative, even pleasurable possibility; far from the disfiguration wrought on bodies in a collision, it is a cut that runs deep into our common life and elicits a whimper. A cut that does not cut into the future but makes present what we can ignore no more. A cut that slices from the inside and lets in something alien. What “strange figures rise” out of such a wound remains a matter of uncertainty, of accident: “A form born of the accident, born by accident, a kind of accident. A funny breed.”

Beneath the ground, something shifts disturbed an organism
curls itself unto you. Eking its way in, your skin begins to tear, a
little rupture at first, and then glossy red droplets of blood leak out.
Drip, drip, drip. Thirsty it crawls in where it is warm and dark,
cradled there it feasts seeking nourishment and growth (murmuring feed
me).Drip, drip, drip deep down low – a punishing rate your heartbeat
dissolves itself within. ANGST! How much more can you take? Let go, let
the horror grip you. Feel it spreading, as deviant fantasies find their
way into your mind, your body mutates. You grind your teeth and liquify
your coat, just ready to slip away, leaving a luring black shiny trail
behind you. Who wants to follow?

Being a host you are now part of a
dynamic relationship, chemical changes occur and you are reminded of a
continuous cycle of the HUNTER becoming the HUNTED. , of consuming and
being consumed.

The proliferating end-time mood is countered by
feelings of potential otherness. A destructive seductive sentiment of
happily feeling the dread, allowed to acknowledge it, you can push the
possibility to transform, to grapple with the seemingly contrasting
moments of angst and liberation.

Time expressed in remnants offers
moments of togetherness. Tendrils find an expanse within to touch. The
orchid grows. Who said parasitism could not be beautiful?

The
Hierarchy of
Lows

The Hierarchy of Lows features the film Fouplay in an installation that reflects on the context of reception of moving images outside the cinema, and in an ethic of immersion that refers to the fairground cinema, the haunted house, the chapel. The tenuous displacements of the scenic device in the exhibition space initiate an oblique dramaturgy that underlines the protagonist's propensity to break the fourth wall. Foulplay is the third in a series of micro-fictions recounting the experiences and mutations of a recurring, perfectly solitary character played by Laura Gozlan: Mum. Foulplay finds her at the bottom of the heap - underground parking lot, sewer - the day after an election, as an insurrection rumbles on. With society on the brink of a new order, Mum is called (on the phone) by a mysterious interlocutor.

“Up is heavens, location of power, down is Foul,” says Mum, Laura Gozlan’s protagonist in the entering scene of Foulplay (2022), a video series that follows Mum’s so called encounters. If the power is located in heavens, what is placed in the foul? Dirt, stench, filth, loss, grief and eventually death? Or could it be a place for cleansing and resurrection? Can we look at grime as a powerful source of liberation? The foul transforming into a place of freedom and magic?
A vaulted underground (Cloaca Maxima) full with greyish water, shadows dancing on its murky walls, acts as a symbolic stage for Mum’s desires, and who inhales some kind of substance and regularly masturbates. Sometimes we hear ringing of an intrusive smartphone. Mum picks up and speaks to Byron (who is unknown to the viewer), in a whispering, seductive voice, at times demanding. She wears a peachy blouse, with well made long nails in smokey green colour. Her hair is greasy, messy. She might be middle aged. Her face looks old, tired, grim and greasy. Who is she? Perhaps Gozlan’s Mum is a mythological or archetypal character, living through a post-apocalyptic world – an imagery borrowed from the horror genre and sci-fi aesthetics that Gozlan likes to deploy. Mum might seem kind, speaking in an alluring, friendly voice, yet there’s something dubious and demanding in her at the same time.
Her rather grotesque appearance could be seen as a protest to the filtered beautified reality that we live through social media today. Yet, it’s hard to say whether she opposes anything, or rather, it could be an act of obeying – especially to ones own body and impulses. Masturbation, as Gozlan tries to indicate, is a migration from upper part (head, intelligence, knowledge or whatever you want to call it) to lower part. This is definitely a tool given back to women to liberate their pleasure, however not explicitly in a sexual context. The masturbation allows one to enter into a kind of magic. Magic of the body. A widespread view is that sexual energy provides the power behind magic. But here, it seems not exactly the point. Gozlan’s approach runs contrary to New Age Instagrammers who awaken their female powers (including sexual) by showing well groomed lifestyles, nor is it about modern self-made witches who run pagan rituals a la Burning Man * aesthetics. Instead, think of a magic that is complex and that derives from horror; the magic of healing, purifying – in the midst of waste. Perhaps Susan Greenwood’s coined term “otherworld” is of a relevance here. As Greenwood describes it: “A land of everything […]. It is a whisper away, it is a shift in consciousness to see the bigger picture and the threads that weave through everything that has ever existed. It is multidimensional, a heartbeat away” *. Gozlan’s work is inspired by the feminist author Starhawk, who since the 1970s has been strongly advocating for ecofeminism and anti-war activism. Interested in relationships between the physical and spiritual self, Starhawk draws attention to women connecting to the Earth and anything natural. In Gozlan’s work, as we see it, this could be very direct metaphor – a foul, cloaca, grime, dirt … the artist uses a reference to Cloacina, an ancient Roman goddess of filth, purification and cleansing, who presides over the sewers. Ancient gods can be very conflicting characters, and so is Mum. Like Baba Yaga, an ambiguous witch who accompanies death, as well as serving as a guardian of nature (Earth Goddess) and who could be even seen as a phallic mother.
Mum is sitting in a car pleasuring herself, and while reaching an orgasm she addresses Byron: “…are you asking me to alleviate the current social issue by means of Sex Magic”? That is followed by a deep, cynical laugh. Maybe it indicates – I’ve hoaxed you all along? She might be an ogre who devours their victims in a sexual sense, or she may be a queen of Cloacina (stemming from the Latin cloaca (drains, sewer) and cluo (to cleanse)). Either of these, as Gozlan points out, opens the arch of magic.

*Burning Man is a neo-pagan-inspired cultural event that has been gathering tens of thousands of people every year in the Nevada desert since 1986. [NdT]

Life and Death in the Laura Gozlan Cinematic Universe (LGCU)With her new show ‘Now you’re inside me,’ French filmmaker and sculptor Laura Gozlan invites the viewer into the catacombs underneath the Zone Rouge – the red zone, an area in northern France so
resplendent with century old corpses, unexploded ordinance and untriggered canisters of mustard
gas that little to no life is said to be able to thrive there. And yet, with the video work shown here, also titled Now you’re inside me (2024), down within the storied medieval quarries underneath the
early-20 th century battlefields along the river Aisne, two players are figured in a high-kitsch moral debate. The young figure of Faust has become lost, and falls through the cut stone corridors from an
illegal rave still audible back somewhere else in the underearth. As she clambers through the vaults, she comes across Mum. Mum is a yellow-eyed husk dressed in the suit of a b-movie Frankenstein’s
Monster, costuming that references that of 1970s Hammer Horror films. Mum is eager to peddle the mind-altering substances that Faust has been taking during her time at the rave, and that initiate the
hallucinatory scene here. Mum is also eager to peddle her own green-glowing soul, that eventually brings this episode to climax. Between Faust and Mum there is a debate that centres ageing, youth,
and the creeping death of lived life. It is the kind of argument that might take place between two
prostitutes of differing generations in an early-morning brasserie after a long shift and too much pastis, or the kind that might take place in a deal struck with Satan.

The slipping ambiguity between these two planes of meaning, between the grimier fog-eyed edges of
our quotidian banal and another deathly plane vaguely mirrored of our own, inform the core aesthetic and narrative drives of Gozlan’s work in film. Now you’re inside me is the fourth instalment
in the wider MOTHER series that has been shown in artistic and cinematic venues over the last five years. The tone of the series is set from the initial scenes of its first chapter titled Y.E.S. I Mum Pls
(2019), where the Gozlan-played protagonist, Mum, smokes the goo and remaining body parts of an
ancient Egyptian mummy in desperate search for the undeath of immortality. She does so after a

liquid-filled sarcophagus was found in Alexandria, Egypt in 2018, and a successful online petition was
made on Change.org titled ‘let people drink the red liquid from the dark sarcophagus.’ The petition

stated, “we need to drink the red liquid from the cursed dark sarcophagus in the form of some sort
of carbonated energy drink so we can assume its powers and finally die.” Though Gozlan’s character

chose to smoke the goo rather than carbonate it, it is in desperately following this same drive that
she is found underground in the fourth video work. Here, Mum wrestles for a small glowing effigy of Casper the Friendly Ghost, her own soul drawn from her waning body, which she now forces down
the throat of the unsuspecting Faust. In the violent throes of this bargaining it is not clear who might have the upperhand. The interaction appears, instead, in the vein of a curse being bodily, forcibly
passed from one host to another. There is a sense of contagion, of a decrepitude that accrues and spreads without end.

These are themes drawn from the experimental fiction of Pierre Klossowski, and his controversial
1965 novel Le Baphomet. The book takes the form of a fragmentary narrative in which the spirits of

immolated medieval monks reconvene centuries after their execution to possess the living, and
debate life and death, the horrors of social morality and recommit to its sexual transgression. Within this undying binary play of Eros and Thanatos it is established that “souls separated from their bodies
should have the privilege to deign what is true, and what is false.” What that truth or falsity may be is

however itself vague and fragmented, as the narrative is tinted by the hallucinatory chemical
processes of dying upon the perceiving faculties of the brain in its final instances of function.

Similarly, events in Gozlan’s films are presented as the fugue of a mind as it waxes into death, the
chamber piece sets, underground sewage tunnels, 19 th century troglodyte abodes, and world war bomb bunkers take on a sense of the innards of a calcifying mind, as the embodied multiplicity of
consciences that reside within it desperately seek a spiritual life beyond their biological end. In this sense the film here shown could perhaps be seen as sludge-baroque retelling of the Pixar film Inside
Out (2015), though extrapolated far into the inferno Disney productions fear to tread.

‘Now you’re inside me,’ precedes a second showing at the gallery, which will include physical works
demonstrating the artist’s recent sculptural practice. This object work is present also here. Within the

white cube of the gallery setting, Gozlan has constructed a theatrical environment; the metal
structure that holds the large LED screen in place in the centre of the gallery, its guts and blinking lights of its construction left laid bare and open to view. Gozlan has also constructed a bench in metal
upon which the audience sit to be engulfed by the unframed viewing surface. In this sense, Gozlan’s

directing eye and hand leave the screen, and spread the contagion of the images presented into the
exhibition space itself, and in which the gallery space becomes the quarried corridors where French soldiers hid from German bombardment during the Second Battle of the Aisne in 1917. Where,
following that battle, those that did not die, mutinied. As such, the white room is displaced, and
becomes the rhizomatic network of tunnels of a dying brain where its chimerical elements drug

themselves as they approach their end, and others ineffectively work to find some escape. When the
green soul has passed from Mum to Faust, Faust breaks the fourth-wall and speaks directly to the

viewer upon their metal-welded seating, where the audience is told that they have entered this
rhizome in an effort “to solve the mystery of their own subjugation.” Whether an artwork is able to answer such questions is a key anxiety upon which Gozlan’s works pivot, and are here given answer
with the removal of a diamond from Mum’s dead anus, from which her pneuma, her spirit, escapes.
Her last breath, or last blow, as the word might equally etymologically denote; a final whispering act
of expulsion of gas from one or another orifice. Gozlan’s video work here presented therefore
presents the viewer with fundamental questions around what it is to be human, and without

sentiment depicts the abstracted, embodied process of the impending collapse of life into death we
all await. In doing so, she confronts the viewer with the realities of our end, that comes not with a bang, but a whimpering escape of air.

When we examine Laura Gozlan’s latest works, and
specially her films, we are tempted to relate her to the
post-Exoticist movement, an artistic and literary
movement that emerged at the end of the 20th
century. Even when it is not absolutely clear who
claims to be part of this movement, or even what it
entails, it is still possible to list its main exponents —
whether they be the authors of authentic works or be
quoted in those publications. The list can include
Antoine Volodine, Manuella Draeger, as well as
Rebecca Wolf or Sonia Velazquez, the former citin the latters’ works. What we can say about Post-
Exoticism, without much too boring paraphrasing, is a
verifiable fact: only authors claiming to belong to the
movement dare to define what they understand by
Post-Exoticism. We can also say that even if its definition
seems quite blurry and its contours fluctuate according
to what may be convenient to a certain author when
developing their narrative, it is almost certain that
Post-Exoticism is not an opportunistic tautology but
rather carries the ambition of a political project.

A project that seems to be drawing the contour ofa possible present, by describing it in the most distorted,
phantasmatic manner possible and by being careful
not to crystallize the movement’s ideas through an
allegory or a metaphor. Post-Exoticism is revolutionary
in that it drastically turns away from the real in order to
figure out an alternative. As Manuella Draeger points
out, “we are unable to say anything about whether it
deals with a phantasm, the memory of a dream or a
real biographical element”. Post-Exoticism is not a
peaceful territory but the theater of violent conflicts
where armed battles take place between opposites
unable to be reconciled —patriarchal capitalist powers
against secret societies, rhizomatic and convoluted,
trying to overthrow them. What does exactly mark the
affinity between Post-Exoticism and the rather elliptic narratives in Laura Gozlan’s films ? Is it the difficulty to ascribe them to a genre — grotesque, horror, erotic,
prophetic, oneiric — or is it their subversive content ?
Laura Gozlan’s films document a world we may refer to
as parallel, that seems to be very near the one we
inhabit but probably located in a cavity on the outside
or below our visibility level. In that cavity hides a
recurrent solitary character: Mum, a middle-aged
woman whose features change from film to film as if
alluding to different times in her life, unless she is
subject to sudden aging or rejuvenating episodes.
Slowing down her cells aging process is actually one of
her main obsessions. This obsession leads her to guzzle
down the juice from a mummy directly out of a
sarcophagus using a straw, as well as to inhale and
exhale vapors — that we suppose are both delicious
and poisonous — in and out of organ-objects that can
look quite obscene according to the angle we view
them from, in addition to other techno-fantasy artifacts
proposing unprecedented articulations between
nature and culture. Another one of her obsessions is
sexual self-pleasure, often following her chemical
raptures. Mum’s onanism does not imply withdrawal
but rather engaging in an offensive against
heteronormative productivism, a joyful and deviant
threat against the forces of so-called “natural order”.
Mum is either seen in a laboratory wearing an elegant
skirt and blouse, or next to a fountain of youth with her
hair unkempt. She delivers prophetic, sibylline
messages in a voice that seems to come from beyond
the grave. Is Mum Laura Gozlan’s alter ego, a
phantasmatic wild avatar ? The character’s grotesque
appearance, made up like Cindy Sherman in her
Disasters series, could confirm this hypothesis and
hence “disguise the obscenity implied in an outpouring
of biographical information when no Post-Exoticist
technique can derealize it”.

Foulplay, Mum’s new film, finds her down — an
underground parking or the sewers — on the day after
elections. Insurrection is in the air. At a moment when
society could cross the line into a new world order,
Mum receives a phone call from a mysterious
character who summons her to transform the fascist
threat into anarchic chaos through her magic sexual
power.

“Neither Rebecca Wolf nor Sonia Velazquez”, explains
Manuella Draeger in Herbs and Golems, “admit that a
social imposture — backed by millions of years of
animal abjection — leads girls, teenage, then adult and old
women to honestly think and say that copulation is in
no way disgusting but on the contrary that it is good for
the body and the soul, essential to the way the world
works and practically wonderful. (...) Without denying
the obvious existence of female sexuality, both consider
coitus to be tinged with blatant violence”.

In Foulplay, Mum becomes a primitive deity. A seedy,
sewage goddess. The incarnation of a separatist,
masturbatory power which will unleash its
revolutionary forces against patriarchy — a truly
Post-Exoticist plan. Manuella Draeger confirms once
again: “The ideal society according to Rebecca Wolf”,
she writes, “the future society towards which
egalitarians must work is austere, fraternal and free
from a legacy of brutality. It is not a matter of orgasm
nor reproduction.» Foulplay defines an illegal action, a
crime. In Laura Gozlan’s film this term also has the
connotation of filth and, literally, of scatological games
— which also evokes the idea of radical self-sufficiency.
But who befouls what ?

“ Laura Gozlan's "Youth Enhancement
Systems" video series (2019) incorporated this exhibition with a staging of herself, in a female character with a transgender voice, in a trance state, smoking a water pipe coming out of a mummified head — the artist summoned at the same time the fantasy of immortality, the industry of slowing down the age
process and the parallel communities of the darknet
(which make indistinct the border between reality and
fiction around "zombie drugs" with devastating effects on the body). It would be tempting to associate this character with one of the major figures of the current feminist struggle — the witch — but the very precise interest of Laura Gozlan for the contemporary vocabulary of the technologies of the body and the
post-human of the necropolitic industries, brings her
closer to the figure of the cyborg. What is immediately striking is her ability to not place herself above her subjects, with judgment as a result.

Laura Gozlan seems to let herself be sucked in by her
objects and experience them, which gives her works
a contaminated, impure character that does not allow
for peaceful reading. Her work lies within the disorder.
During her exhibition at 40mcube, her character, MUM, appears to have aged, summoning an old
age hated both by representations of healthy culture and a young bloodthirsty art world. Moreover, by associating old age with desire, sexuality and the libidinal autonomy of older women, the subject then
becomes unbearable. Laura Gozlan frontally tackles
one of the most enduring taboos in patriarchal culture:
female masturbation. But we must rather think here of an auto-sexuality freed from all the classic patterns of
heteronormativity: a non-human erotic that unfolds in surfaces, materials and objects, without an imposed quest for productivity, reproducibility or climax ("beyond the omnipotence of orgasm", adds Gozlan).
If the artist associates the character of MUM with the
"monstrous feminine" of the theorist of feminist cinema
and horror Barbara Creed, it is through the overflowing
figure of the “archaic mother", who reproduces herself
through self-generation and self-doubling, or through the figure of the female vampire, associated with
lesbian desire, which arouses male panic of menstrual blood. If, for Barbara Creed, horror cinema has the
capacity to generate a zone of emancipation allowing
reparation by returning to the trauma, Laura Gozlan's video installations at 40mcube carry a power of affirmation, transforming loneliness into enjoyable autonomy. Taking an interest in Aleister Crowley's texts on " sexual magic " capable, according to him, of transforming the perception of reality, the artist

reclaims this patriarchal voice from a feminist point
of view. There is also a lot of talk about voices in this
exhibition, on the premise that "language is a virus",
as William Burroughs put it in The Soft Machine. When
MUM penetrates the horn of a gramophone with her hand, it is less a question of a sexuality confined to the organs, to the throat, than of the invention of a "trans" space for epidemic, contaminated bodies. "When otherness is voices in your head, you can look for otherness in your own body" says the artist.
Masturbation then becomes a policy of re-learning oneself.”

You can feel the pressing heat spilling inside of your
body

It’s feeding your nerve endings

It rhythmizes them, tickles them

Hurry up, quick, before they see you

Hold up a little, release and ...

Franco “Bifo” Berardi says, that capitalism is “based on
an endless postponement of pleasure, and simultaneously on the permanent excitement of desire”1. In this
context, we can view the boiling ways of self-gratification and absorbing moments of climaxing as subtle,
mass-practiced instants of resistance, which, however,
do not deny the logic described by Bifo. On the contrary, they adopted it, ride with it and use it in their own revolutionary benefit. Extension and postponement of the moment of climax makes it more intense
and all the more excites us and our desires to reach it
again, but despite the mentioned logic of capitalism is pleasure - more or less articulated, more or less directly
and more or less involving our bodies – close at hand
almost anytime.

Laura Gozlan’s installation composes a space of
performative experience of climax. She positions the moments of theatrically articulated lust and satisfaction into a contrasting and intimate environment
disrupted by dark moments which disarray the social standards, and which refer to prosthetic aesthetics or senescence. In her videos moist by various bodily
liquids (Dead Fingers Talk I, II and
III, 2021) we see an older woman situated in a composed setting of a
theatre scene, loudly and shamelessly pleasing herself
while confronting us with her penetrative, patriarchy
unnerving looks.

Together with objects derived from the shape of clitoris and torso castings, referring to self-restricting and -
metaphorically speaking – the effort to pour bodies into
stiff, impermeable forms, the artist points out to conceptions that were introduced to us as “innapropriate”,
as “tabu”. She confronts our internalized discomfort
from unfiltered gratification, sexuality of the elderly or prosthetic bodies... Orgasm thus becomes a mobilizing
element, an accelerator. The beginning, the process, the end.
